The Inequalities of National Insurance

All the discussion about National Insurance in the news has made me think about how inequitable it is.

If you work for two or three (or more) small Parish Councils and your salary is under the NI threshold individually, but the combined income is over the threshold, you are generally advised to make personal contributions to your ‘Stamp’ (unless you have children under 12 and you claim the child benefit, when it is automatically added to your record).

However, this is totally inequitable. I don’t have a problem with paying the NI, but I think it wrong that the employers are not making additional contributions.

This is an issue which is much wider than the Clerking world, but is one which I suspect is very common with those of us with small parishes.

Certainly an issue worth thinking about.
